The February 11th meeting will take place in its new location, see the side column for the address.
This is Valentine’s Day month, so we will, of course, be celebrating with CHOCOLATE! As Louise already said, bring your favorite and bring some to share. Candy, cake, whatever works. Anything chocolate works for me.
Our craft focus this month will be on Developing: An Idea, Characters, and Settings. I have added the handouts to the Resources section. These are what I use in the two writing classes I teach. But I know there are so many more thoughts on the subjects. Please share yours with us. If you have information you want to share as handouts/printouts, add them…or send them to me and I will add them for you.
Be sure to bring any issues you’re having on a current writing project. We are here to help each other.
Also, if you want to try a writing challenge, again, these are what I used in my February writing classes. You can use any/all of the words in a sentence, a scene, a short story. Or you can try your hand at the writing prompt.
WORDS: lightning – peach – surprised – pine tree – knee
PROMPT: Write about the first time you held someone’s hand.
A friend of mine, a director for a local senior center, hates the word “retirement.” She prefers the term “re-firing.” The former word implies withdrawal from an active working life. The latter is more of changing that former life into something new.
The WARA group struggled the past year with the question of whether or not to stay in existence. Was there really a need for the group?
After much discussion, we decided “yes” there is a need for the group. Maybe not in the original form, but in a modified form that meets the desires for something useful to the current members.
As part of our “re-firing” effort, we will have a monthly focus on a particular aspect of the writing craft. There will be discussions on how that relates to each of our writers. We will share our experiences on the focus subject, as well as our concerns with struggling in some manner. We will offer education and support.
Additionally, we have lowered the annual dues to $10 because our expenses are minimal at this time. We are also changing to a new location for the meetings. See the address listed on the home page.
Check out the Meetings list to see the proposed schedule of focus programs for 2018.
Join us at our regular meeting place at Sheridan Village, 3-5 pm.
Brainstorming: Feel free to bring something on which you want feedback: first chapter, chapter where it all falls apart, plot twist, character that won’t behave. We’ll see what we can do to brainstorm you through it.
Writing Prompt: Come up with something that interests you to write briefly about.
OR …Imagine you are in your house and water is rising around it. You may have a half hour or a half day before it rises to the top of the ceiling of the highest room. What do you do? What do you gather? What steps do you take to get to safety?
